Introduction
The suspension notification usually arrives overnight, and by the time you read it, your listings are down, your ad spend is still running, and your instinct is to write back fast, explain that you are a good seller, and ask for the account back.
Your appeal gets denied, and Amazon is not weighing your intent, but it’s checking whether you have identified what was broken and proved you fixed it.
The good news is that suspension is a process issue, and there is a known process for addressing it. You need to diagnose the exact trigger and write a plan of action that addresses it, providing evidence for every claim; most well-documented cases receive a response within Amazon’s stated window.
Here you will find the short answer, followed by the five steps in detail.
Amazon suspended your account
Submit a plan of action that names the exact root cause, not a general explanation.
You need to go to Seller Central, click on Performance, select Account Health, and locate the violation or metric mentioned in your performance notification.
This notification represents the trigger, which you have to directly answer. An appeal that says you always sell high-quality products doesn’t give Amazon anything particular to verify.
Those that already state the ASIN, root cause, and corrective action taken are reviewed. Once you have submitted a complete plan of action, Amazon will respond within 24 to 48 hours, but more complex cases take longer.
Here’s the process in five steps:
Step 1: Find the real trigger, not the guessed one
Before you write a word of the appeal, open the performance notification and read it side by side with your Account Health dashboard.
Amazon suspends accounts for three broad reasons: performance metric failures, policy violations, and product authenticity or intellectual property complaints. Each one needs a structurally different plan of action, and submitting the wrong one is the most common reason first appeals fail.
Metric suspensions are the easiest to pin down. Amazon expects your order defect rate to stay below 1%, your late shipment rate under 4%, and your cancellation rate under 2.5%.
Before you think you know why, pull the report behind whichever one breached. The order level data usually tells a much more definitive story than the summary number, and on a low-volume account a single A-to-Z claim is enough to push a defect rate into the suspension range all by itself.
Policy and intellectual property cases behave differently. They’re more likely to be from a flagged listing or a rights-owner complaint than a metrics breach, so they can fall on an account with a perfect performance history.
If the notification refers to a specific ASIN, a brand complaint, or a restricted product, then your root cause must address that listing and nothing else. Widening the appeal to cover your whole catalog weakens it.
Before continuing, write down one sentence identifying the violation, the ASIN or metric affected, and the dates involved. If you can't write it based on the evidence you have, you're just guessing.
Step 2: Check your account health rating and what it means
Your Account Health Rating is a score between 0 and 1,000 that assesses your policy compliance and performance over the last 180 days. New sellers start at 200, and the score changes as violations accumulate or are cleared.
Use this table as an early warning system. If the rating falls in the 100 to 199 range, this is your chance to address the underlying issue before Amazon deactivates the account. A red rating without corrective action almost always escalates.
It also determines your appeal. A suspension on an otherwise healthy account indicates a single acute event, while months in an at-risk account indicate a pattern, and your preventive measures will need to be more convincing.
Step 3: Build your plan of action
Amazon wants three things, and skipping or softening any one will get your appeal rejected, no matter how strong the other two are. This is why you must label each one as a separate block, not fold them into a narrative.
A reviewer working through a queue should find all three in under a minute.
- Root cause. State exactly what happened, which ASIN or order, and why. “High standards are something we always maintain” doesn’t really tell Amazon anything. However, statements such as “Supplier invoice for ASIN B0XXXXXXX was never uploaded before the compliance deadline because no one in the team was responsible for uploading it” clearly state the problem.
- Corrective actions taken. Write this part in the past tense all the way through. Amazon wants proof that you already resolved the problem, not a promise that you will resolve the issues.
- For example, "We will review our invoice process” is a plan, but "We removed the listing on August 3, refunded the four affected orders on August 4, and obtained the supplier invoice on August 5” is a fix and not a plan. Name the listing, the refund, the document, and the date each one was done.
- Preventive measures. This is the element that answers the root cause. If the invoice was never uploaded because nobody owned that step, the preventive measure is that somebody now owns it: a named person, a written procedure, or a check that has to pass before a listing goes live.
The test is simple. Would this procedure have caught the violation three months ago? If the answer is no, it’s a sentiment and not a measure.
Step 4: Submit and monitor your case log
File it through Seller Central under Performance, then Account Health, then Reactivate Your Account.
Your case is added to the Seller Performance review queue, and Amazon’s responses are added to your case log, not just sent to your email. Look at the log yourself. A day can be lost waiting for a reply asking for one more document, and a day is expensive when your money is tied up.
Send one full appeal, not several partial appeals. Filing again while the first one is still open does not speed anything up. This will push your case to the back of the queue and can flag your submissions as spam, which is the opposite of the urgency you were trying to signal.
While you're waiting, keep the rest of the account clean. Reply to buyer messages, process refunds for orders already placed, and avoid changing your listings in a way that may appear that you are hiding the issue being reviewed. A second violation during the appeal makes the picture the reviewer sees different.
Step 5: Escalate if your appeal is denied
A denial is a checklist and not a verdict you should argue with. Work out which of the three elements Amazon has found an issue with, then rewrite that section with more detail and better documentation.
Resubmitting the same appeal with the wording tidied up almost never works, because Amazon is deciding whether you have control over the problem, not whether you sound sorry about it.
It is usually the same element that fails. Corrective actions are easily proved because they have already happened. Preventing recurrence means naming a process, the person who owns it, and how often it runs; appeals that leave out any one of those three elements read as good intentions.
If the case is sitting for a long time or a well-documented appeal keeps being denied, escalate within the same Seller Central case (rather than opening a new case) and quote your case ID.
For sellers who have truly exhausted the normal process, there are avenues outside of the normal queue, up to arbitration through the American Arbitration Association.
What happens to your funds and inventory during a suspension
After the suspension, Amazon holds your remaining funds for up to 90 days. Get reinstated inside that window, and normal disbursement takes over by itself. If the 90 days pass and the account is still down, you can still ask for the remaining balance.
Plan your cash flow around the hold from the start. Identify supplier payments, ad invoices, and payroll dates that fall in the next three months, and determine early which ones can wait.
Sellers who expect the full hold to be the worst case frequently find it was the normal case.
Your inventory will remain in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and the storage fees will keep accumulating. If reinstatement is days away, then leaving it there is normally the cheaper call.
If the case is complex, or the stock is seasonal or short-lived, consider your removal options early and make that a decision in its own right rather than something to sort out after the appeal.
Common mistakes that get appeals rejected
- Guessing the root cause. If you provide a generic explanation that doesn't relate to the metric or listing in your notification, Amazon will assume you haven't looked.
- Writing corrective actions in the future tense. "We will update our process" is a plan. Amazon wants to see what you already did.
- Submitting without documentation. A claim with nothing attached doesn't move the case forward.
- Opening a new seller account. Amazon matches device fingerprints, IP addresses, and bank account information across accounts. Usually, the new account gets suspended for a related-account violation, and the suspension blocks your way back to the original account.
- Filing several appeals at once. Each new submission can send you back to the end of the queue instead of speeding anything up.
- Arguing that it is unfair. Sellers will often reach out to explain how long they've been selling on Amazon or how one bad buyer tanked their metrics. None of it works. The reviewer is only checking whether the problem is fixed, so spend your words on evidence instead.
How we handle suspensions at Olifant Digital
At Olifant Digital, our Amazon Brand Management service writes each plan of action against the exact violation named in your notification. There are no templates because the fastest way to get a second denial is to have a root cause mismatch.
A senior specialist with at least 7 years of experience owns the case from diagnosis to resubmission, so the person writing the appeal is the person who read the account data.
Prior to writing a word about any of it, our proprietary tool Olifant AI cross-references the account’s performance history to the notification to verify what has actually caused the suspension.
Running underneath all of it is daily account health monitoring. A metric that drifts toward its threshold is a problem you fix in the afternoon. The same metric after deactivation is everything that is described above. Each engagement is backed by our 60-day money-back guarantee on management fees.
Frequently asked questions
Should I write the plan of action myself or hire someone?
Either one works, as long as the appeal states what the exact violation was and provides evidence of the fix.
If the trigger is a single clean event you can document in an afternoon, do it yourself. If the notice is vague, if there are multiple open violations on the account at the same time, or if you have filed a first appeal that has already been denied, then you should get help because every denial reduces the amount of room you have left to work with.
Do my ads keep running while my account is suspended?
No. When the account is deactivated, your listings go down, which means the campaigns pointing at them have nothing to serve. Still, double-check your campaign settings early so spending doesn't start over against listings not ready the second the account comes back.
What is a rights-owner retraction and is it faster than appealing?
If the suspension came from an intellectual property complaint, the owner who filed it can withdraw it. A retraction often ends up revolving the case more directly than an appeal does because it removes the complaint instead of arguing against it.
Contact the rights owner politely and in good faith, and resolve whatever it is that prompted the complaint. Then, ask them to submit the retraction to Amazon. Prepare your appeal in parallel instead of waiting on a reply that may never come.
Will a suspension affect my Buy Box and rankings after reinstatement?
Usually, yes. Sales velocity drives organic rank. A listing that stopped selling for two weeks comes back ranked lower than it was before the suspension. It might take time to get it back, so plan for a ramp, not an instant return.
And don’t cut the price very deeply on day one to force it back, as that trains the algorithm on a margin you don’t want to keep.
Can I still handle existing orders while my account is deactivated?
Ship anything that is already sold, answer buyer messages, and honor refunds.
Leaving those unresolved creates new defects on an account that is already under review, and a fresh violation while your appeal is being read undercuts the exact thing the appeal claims, which is that the problem is under control.
Conclusion
An account suspension is reversible, and the process doesn’t involve anything mysterious.
Read the notification on your Account Health Dashboard until you are able to name the exact trigger. Then, write a plan of action using the three elements in it, and attach evidence to every claim that you make. Then watch the case log rather than your inbox.
The accounts that stay down the longest are not the ones with the worst violations but are the ones that guessed at the root cause, wrote their corrective actions in future tense, or opened a second account instead of repairing the first.
Each one of these buys another round of denial, and every round costs another week of held funds and lost rank.
Spend the hour on the data before you write the first sentence. That hour is the whole difference, and if you would rather have someone who does this weekly handle the diagnosis with you, get a free marketing plan from Olifant Digital and start there.
